Strike Over!
YVR Janitors have ratified a new collective agreement!
Thank you allies for all your support! This would not have been possible without you!
Workers need $25/hr
Workers have been without a contract since the end of September. Alpine Building Maintenance has refused to offer janitors wages that keep up with rising costs. Many YVR janitors are forced to work two jobs at the airport just to make ends meet. Workers have been left with no choice but to strike.
Workers need retirement security
Seniors shouldn’t be forced to keep working because stopping is a poverty-sentence.
Every person in Canada should be able to retire with dignity and CPP and OAS are not enough.
Workers Voices
233 Alpine workers clean nearly the entire airport including the terminals, bathrooms, hallways, exterior, YVR operations, before and beyond security checkpoints.
“We know what other contractors at YVR are being paid. We know the airport relies on our hard work and we deserve to be treated with justice.”
—Varinder Singh
“We have been respectful in bargaining. We work hard at the airport with heavy workloads. But most of us still struggle to make ends meet. The company has left us no choice but to take action.”
—Cristina Ignacio
“At the end of the day, YVR workers need fairness and respect. We are the ones that welcome travelers to our city. We need to continue to show our unity to win what we deserve!”
—Sharlita Ortaleza
“I work two full-time jobs at the airport so I can support my family. Alpine’s offer is not enough to live in this city. That’s why many of us are forced to work multiple jobs just to survive.”
—Normilita Manuel
“As a new dad with a newborn baby, I would love to spend more time at home with my family. But I work two jobs at the airport because it is impossible to pay all expenses with one job.”
—Razwan Hossain Rifat
“We’re done sweeping this under the rug. It’s time management wipe away the excuses and pay us what we are worth, because floors this spotless shouldn’t come at the cost of empty pockets.”
—Shayam Prashad Acharya
YVR “best” airport in North America
The World Airport Awards recognized YVR as the best and cleanest in North America – let’s recognize service workers for that by providing them with fair compensation.
Tamara Vrooman, President & CEO at YVR says that it’s a result of the dedication and hard work of employees and everyone working at YVR.
She says the recognition belongs to the workers and wants to acknowledge and thank them for all their work this past year.
But “thanks” doesn’t pay the bills.
It’s within YVR’s power to ensure cleaners receive a fair wage and have retirement security.
What the Public Can Do
First, thank you for your patience and support!
If you’d like to take action, it’s worth noting the airport subcontracts the cleaning work at YVR and the buck stops with them. They have the power to tell Alpine Cleaning Maintenance to provide workers with fair wages and retirement security.

Dear Ms. Vrooman,
Janitors working for Alpine Building Maintenance are on strike at YVR. SEIU Local 2 has been negotiating with the cleaning company, but they have not been able to reach an agreement because Alpine refuses to provide retirement security and wages that keep up with rising costs. Many YVR janitors are forced to work two jobs at the airport just to make ends meet.
As the President and CEO of YVR, it is in your power to help fix this.
Workers need $25 per hour – a wage other service workers at the airport already make. Our seniors should be able to retire with dignity.
I support striking janitors. Please ensure workers at YVR get what they need to support their families and retire with dignity.
Respectfully,
[your name]
